Students have finished their projects for Guild Hall! Grades Kindergarten through sixth grade will have work in the exhibit. Here is a snapshot of some of the art students worked so hard on.
Sixth grade did a wonderful job on their painted paper self-portraits. They hand-painted paper creating designs and textures. Students drew a contour drawing of themselves then cut the painted paper into small pieces to assemble a mosaic-like collage.
Fifth grade created individual forms using art elements to communicate an idea or object of interest similar to artist Frank Stella. The individual pieces were combined into one. Students worked together to collaborate on the aesthetics as well as the physical and visual balance of the final form.
Earlier in the year, fourth grade traveled to LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton. This is always a favorite field trip! While there, they did sketches and took notes of different plant life. From the sketches and close-up photographs, students created intricate and colorful illustrations of a chosen plant.
Somewhat similar to origami, students in third grade created kirigami, which is cut paper instead of folded paper. Using painted paper cut into concentric circles, students created symmetrical designs and layered the circles size order.
Second grade learned about Mexican Tona Masks. It was interesting to learn that the animal masks are chosen by individuals to reflect a trait about that person and in the culture the connections to the animal are believed to be quite powerful. Students chose their animal and used plaster craft to create a likeness of the animal. For the final touches they added some interesting colors and other materials to emphasis the features.
First grade students looked at still life paintings of Henri Matisse and Paul Cezanne. Vases and flowers to be exact. They focused on creating symmetrical vases with fanciful designs. More symmetry was applied when creating the layered paper flowers. Students had a lot of fun creating these 3-D vase and flowers.
The Kindergarten class worked together to create 4 large Aztec-inspired wall hangings. Each student had a section to design which they used lines, shapes and colors to resemble the beautiful designs seen in Aztec rugs. They also collaborated on designs deciding what colors, shapes and lines would work well together.
